Abstract
The adsorption of a soft X-ray photon, exciting a core electron in a free molecule, leads to a chain of events the final result of which is the fragmentation of the molecule. In low Z elements the core hole decays preferentially via a two electron Auger transition, which depletes the molecule of electrons out of the bonding valence structure such that it becomes unstable and falls apart into ionic and neutral fragments. Here these processes will be discussed step by step taking CO as example.
