Abstract
Grid technology attempts to support flexible, secure, coordinated information sharing among dynamic collections of individuals, institutions, and resources. The use of Grid services requires a resourceful workstation, specialized software installed locally and expert intervention. Mobile handheld devices in general do not posses enough computational and communication assets to meet the criteria for utilizing the Grid infrastructure services. We present the design of a middleware approach that aids handheld devices in this regard by wrapping the computational and resource intensive tasks in a surrogate and shifting them to a capable machine for execution. Reduction in computational burden at the handheld device is analyzed in a test scenario.
