For decades now BMW Motorrad has been regarded as a pioneer when it comes to safety in conjunction with motorcycling. Thanks to its innovative power, the manufacturer has also established itself as a trendsetter in the field of optimum motorcycle lighting at a very early stage and will also continue to offer additional safety benefits in the future.

Next to ABS, DTC and motorcycle characteristics than can be selected by the rider, the K 1600 GT/GTL was the first seriesproduction motorcycle in the world to offer an adaptive headlight (optional extra exworks) in combination with standard xenon headlight, . The detection of the banking angle and nodding motions of the vehicle leads to considerably improved lighting of the road when cornering and thus achieves an enormous increase in riding safety. The so-called light rings were also used on the K 1600 GT/GTL for the first time as well as the side lights which are typical for BMW automobiles.

The latest example of the innovative power of BMW Motorrad in this area is the first ever full LED headlight with integrated daytime running light to be used in series motorcycle production, available as an option for the new R 1200 GS, , presented in 2012. As a worldwide first this LED main headlight illuminates the road with a level of clarity hitherto unknown. The LED units of the headlamp with their two glass double lenses are strikingly distinctive and powerful in terms of their luminosity. The switchover between daytime running light and low beam is carried out either manually with the button at the end of the rod or automatically via sensor. With the daytime running light, the motorcycle can be seen much better during the day which makes travelling considerably safer.
