Summary
The image most commonly associated with the notion of „identity“ is probably a sphere or a ball, something closed in itself. While the corresponding “classical” idea of identity within the social sciences came into crisis with the “cultural turn”, this image has not been satisfactorily displaced by a new one. On the basis of a relational view of reality (Cassirer, Rorty, Bourdieu), the present article proposes a new model and metaphor, which conceives of identities as networks of dispositions of actors. The article starts out by anchoringthe theoretical problem within social movement theory. Then, the development of a theoretical model progresses through the empirical analysis of religious movements in a situation of civil war (Guatemala). By analysing the deep structures of the practical operators, which the actors employ to perceive, to judge and to act, it is possible to reconstruct these operators in a network-model, showing basic traits of practical logic that dominate the life of the actors. On this basis, theoretical perspectives of a network model of identity can be developed. Long standing problems of identity theory — e.g. individual vs. collective identity, the relations between cognition, emotion and body, or the linkage between identity and social structure — are being discussed within the framework of social movement theory and reinterpreted in the light of the network model.
