Abstract
We present a chaotic lidar for underwater ranging and three-dimension (3D) imaging applications. The lidar transmitter based on a laser diode with free space optical feedback is designed to generate 520 nm wavelength wideband chaotic signal. This transmitter is used with a correlation-based lidar receiver to perform a ranging demonstration in clean water with a measured attenuation coefficient of 0.06 m−1 at 520 nm. The experimental results prove that 1.2 cm mean absolute error (MAE) and 3.4 cm range resolution can be achieved and kept in a range of 140 cm at least. Moreover, employing a two-axis mirror for laser scanning, the possibility of the designed chaotic lidar system for 3D imaging is also verified.
