Abstract
A simple general derivation of the Hartree#x2014;Fock equations is given. The derivation is based on the Brillouin theorem which is proved in its most general form for a Slater determinant built up from not necessarily orthogonal spin orbitals. The Hartree#x2014;Fock equations can be obtained as a specific formulation of the Brillouin theorem for the case of orthogonal spin orbitals.
