Summary
Anorectal endosonography (ARES), over the past 15 years, has been developing in two directions: the staging of rectal cancer, and more recently, the exploration of sphincteric ruptures. An extremely efficient technique in the study of the anal canal, and of the muscles of the posterior perineum, the field of ARES may be extended towards functional disorders. A recent review of the literature confirms, in fact, the multiplicity of publications on anal incontinence and on problems with defecation, in particular in pediatrics. These two themes will be successively approached after a review of descriptive and functional ultrasonic-anatomy.
