Gastric xanthelasma

Xantelasma gàstrico

  • Published:
Acta Endoscopica

Summary

Gastric xanthelasms were found in 0.61% of 1,475 gastroscopies. The 9 patients had above 55 years of age. Xanthelasms appeared not related to metabolic disorders. They showed as small yellowish macular lesions, single or double. Histologically they were constituted by agglomerated foam cells in the lamina propria of the stomach.

Inflammatory mucosal aspects, specially atrophic gastritis, in bioptic specimens taken far from xanthelasms were frequently shown. 3 patients had also circumscribed gastric lesions.

The gastroscopic findings of xanthelasms should be considered as an indirect evidence of severe inflammatory changes of the gastric mucosa.
