Abstract
Factors affecting the machinability of automatic steels containing sulfur and lead, namely, the microstructure of the pearlite and the content of sulfur and lead additive, are investigated. It is shown that satisfactory machinability of lightly loaded parts can be provided under certain cutting conditions by producing an optimum morphology for the pearlite in the steel and increasing the sulfur concentration without adding lead.
