Abstract
The permanganate oxidation of diethyl maleate and diethyl fumarate in aqueous ethanol has been studied by the stopped-flow technique. The reaction is first order with respect to both MnO −4 and the esters. The rate constant is independent of the pH. The trans species is about 50 times more reactive than its cis counterpart, which is due predominantly to steric reasons.
