Abstract
The melting of reduced iron-ore pellets in an arc furnace is considered. The refined model of the combined heating and melting of the pellets takes account of the action of the electrical arc close to the electrodes and the formation of a solid crust. Simulation indicates that the melting of pellets close to the electrodes intensifies the electrosmelting of steel, with clear economic benefits.
