Abstract
Acid whey is a dairy byproduct that is suitable for anaerobic conversion to valuable biogas. Treating raw acid whey in a two-stage anaerobic digester unfortunately results in mineral precipitates that inhibit the active biomass. To prevent this, we used a precipitation reactor between stages, after adjusting temperature and pH. We achieved an average reduction of 95.3 percent of chemical oxygen demand and produced the equivalent of 21.6 liters of fossil fuel energy in biogas (192 kWh) for one cubic meter of acid whey.
