Abstract
We study the existence of a solution to the mixed boundary value problem for Helmholtz and Poisson type equations in a bounded Lipschitz domain \(\Omega \subset \mathbb {R}^N\) and in \(\mathbb {R}^N{\setminus }\Omega \) for \(N\ge 3\). The boundary \(\partial \Omega \) of \(\Omega \) is the decomposition of \(\Gamma _1,\Gamma _2\subset \partial \Omega \) such that \(\partial \Omega =\Gamma =\overline{\Gamma }_1\cup \Gamma _2=\Gamma _1\cup \overline{\Gamma }_2\) and \(\Gamma _1\cap \Gamma _2=\emptyset \). We have shown that if the Neumann data \(f_2\in H^{-\frac{1}{2}}(\Gamma _2)\) and the Dirichlet data \(f_1\in H^{\frac{1}{2}}(\Gamma _1)\) then the Helmholtz problem with mixed boundary data admits a unique solution. We have also shown the existence of a weak solution to a mixed boundary value problem governed by the Poisson equation with a measure data and the Dirichlet, Neumann data belongs to \(f_1\in H^{\frac{1}{2}}(\Gamma _1)\), \(f_2\in H^{-\frac{1}{2}}(\Gamma _2)\), respectively.

1 Introduction
The Poisson problem with mixed Dirichlet–Neumann boundary conditions deals with conductivity, heat transfer, metallurgical melting, wave phenomena, elasticity and electrostatics in mathematical physics and engineering. The detailed applications can be found in Dauge (1992), Fabrikant (1991), Jochmann (1999), Lagnese (1983), Maz’ya and Rossmann (2006), Rempel and Schulze (1989), Simanca (1988), Sneddon (1966), Wendland et al. (1979) and the references therein. A common problem of interest found in the literature is the following mixed boundary value (MBVP).
where, \(\Omega \) is a bounded Lipschitz domain in \(\mathbb {R}^N\) for \(N\ge 3\). The boundary of \(\Omega \), which will be denoted by \(\Gamma \), is the disjoint union of \(\Gamma _1\) and \(\Gamma _2\) which are subsets of \(\Gamma \) such that \(\overline{\Gamma }_1\cup \Gamma _2=\Gamma _1\cup \overline{\Gamma }_2=\Gamma \) and \(\Gamma _1\cap \Gamma _2=\emptyset \). Further, L is a second order elliptic operator, M is a general first order oblique differential operator on \(\Gamma _2\).
Lieberman (1986, 1989) considered the problem (1.1) and proved the existence and Hölder continuity of classical solutions with smooth data. The techniques used in the corresponding Dirichlet problem (\(\Gamma _2=\emptyset \)) and oblique derivative problem (\(\Gamma =\Gamma _2\)) of (1.1) are helpful to show the existence of solutions to the mixed boundary value problem. It is worth to mention the work due to Azzam and Kreyszig (1982), as they have provided the regularity result for MBVP in a plane domain with corners, where the Dirichlet data belongs to \(C^{2,\alpha }(\Gamma {\setminus }\{0\})\) and the remaining boundary data is in \(C^{1,\alpha }(\Gamma {\setminus }\{0\})\). The work due to Sykes and Brown (2001) deals with the boundary regularity of problem (1.1) with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions where L is the Laplacian operator, \(h=0\) in \(\Omega \), \(g\in L^p(\Gamma _2)\), \(f\in W^{1,p}(\Gamma _1)\) for \(1<p\le 2\) and the angle between \(\Gamma _1\), \(\Gamma _2\) should be strictly less than \(\pi \) in the interface. Sykes and Brown (2001) drew motivation from Brown (1994), who considered the two boundary data as \(f\in H^1(\Gamma _1)\) and \(g\in L^2(\Gamma _2)\).
Not much of literature is found for MBVP involving a measure data, although Liang and Rodrigues (1996) considered a problem involving measure data both on the domain and on the boundary \(\Gamma _2\). Some work has been done by Gallouët and Sire (2011), where the nonlinearity lies on the boundary with measure supported on the domain \(\Omega \) and on the boundary \( \Gamma _2\). The MBVP in Gallouët and Sire (2011) posessess a weak solution u in \( W^{1,q}(\Omega )\), for all \(1<q<\frac{N}{N-1}\) and the trace of u on \(\Gamma \) lies in \(W^{1-\frac{1}{q},q}(\Gamma )\), for all \(1\le q< \frac{N}{N-1}\).
In this article we have considered the following two mixed boundary value problems. The first problem (P1) is

Throughout the article \(\frac{\partial u}{\partial \hat{n}}\) will represent the normal derivative with respect to the outward unit normal \(\hat{n}\) to the boundary, \(f_1\in H^{\frac{1}{2}}(\Gamma _1)\), \(f_2\in H^{-\frac{1}{2}}(\Gamma _2)\) are boundary data, \(h\in \widetilde{H}^{-1}(\Omega )\), \(\mu \) will denote a bounded Radon measure, \(\lambda \in \mathbb {C}\) with \(Im(\lambda )\ge 0\) and \(\lambda ^2\) will be different from the eigenvalues of the Laplacian (\(-\Delta \)). We will, at some places, refer problem (1.2), (1.6) as interior problems (IP1), (IP2) respectively and (1.3), (1.7) as exterior problems (EP1), (EP2) respectively. This work is motivated from the work of Chang and Choe (2008) and Ernst (1987) where the authors have used the method of layer potentials to show the uniqueness of solution to the homogeneous mixed boundary value problem in both interior and exterior domains. Chang and Choe (2008) has shown that for \(h=0\) and \(\lambda =0\) the solution u belongs to \(H^1(\Omega )\) for the interior problem and belongs to \(H^1_{loc}(\mathbb {R}^N{\setminus }{\bar{\Omega }})\) for the exterior problem. This u also satisfies the following inequality.

The novelty of our work is the consideration of two nonhomogenous mixed boundary value problems and a Radon measure \(\mu \) as a nonhomogeneous term in (P2), for which the solution space becomes weaker than the Sobolev space \(H^1(\Omega )\). We have shown the existence of a unique solution to the problem (P1) by boundary layer method in Sect. 3 using the representation formula of solution and the invertibility of boundary layer operators of Helmholtz equation given in Sects. 2.1 and 2.2, respectively. Due to insufficient given boundary data, we have also found out the cauchy data, i.e. \(u|_{\Gamma }\) and \(\frac{\partial u}{\partial \hat{n}}\big |_{\Gamma }\) for the problem (P1). On applying this method, we get unique solutions to the approximating problems to (P2) and then guarantee the existence of solution to the problem (P2). The Helmholtz operator (\(-\Delta -\lambda ^2\)) is not a coercive operator, so we discuss the problem (P2) with the Laplace operator (\(-\Delta \)). Since the continuous embeddings in Lebesgue spaces and Marcinkiewicz spaces fail in unbounded domains, we have not considered measures in the problem (1.7) and in the boundary conditions.
2 Preliminary Definitions and Properties of Boundary Layer Potentials
We will denote several constants by C which can only depend on \(\Omega \), N and independent of the indices of the sequences. The value of C can be different from line to line and sometimes, on the same line.
For \(1\le p\le \infty \) and a nonnegative integer k, the Sobolev space \(W^{k,p}(\Omega )\) Evans (2010) is defined as

Let \(H^{-\alpha }(\Gamma )\) is the dual space of \(H^{\alpha }(\Gamma )\), i.e. \(H^{-\alpha }(\Gamma )=(H^{\alpha }(\Gamma ))^*\). 2.1 Derivation of Representation Formulae

Proof
Let us consider a \(g\in L^2(\Gamma )\). From the above Proposition 2.12, \(\left( \frac{1}{2}I+K^*_\lambda \right) \) is bijective from \(L^2(\Gamma )\) to itself. Hence, there exists a \(g'\in L^2(\Gamma )\) such that \((\frac{1}{2}I+K^*_{\lambda })g'=g\).

3 Existence and Uniqueness Results of (P1)
Theorem 3.1
Let \(\Gamma _1\subset \Gamma \), then \(S_{11}:\widetilde{H}^{-\frac{1}{2}}(\Gamma _1)\rightarrow {H}^{\frac{1}{2}}(\Gamma _1)\) is a bijective operator.
Proof
We break the proof into three steps.
Step 1. The operator \(S_{11}\) is injective.
Assume that there exists \(g_2\in \widetilde{H}^{-\frac{1}{2}}(\Gamma _1)\) such that \(S_{11}g_2=0\) on \(\Gamma _1\). We write \(v_1(x)=\mathbb {S}_\lambda \widetilde{g}_2(x)\), for all \(x\in \mathbb {R}^N{\setminus }\Gamma \), where \(\widetilde{g}_2\in {H}^{-\frac{1}{2}}(\Gamma )\) is the zero extension of \(g_2\). Hence, from the Eqs. (2.4)–(2.5) we have \(v_1^i=v_1^e\in {H}^{\frac{1}{2}}(\Gamma )\) and from (2.10), \(\frac{\partial v_1^i}{\partial \hat{n}}-\frac{\partial v_1^e}{\partial \hat{n}}=\widetilde{g}_2.\)
On replacing \(h_1,h_2\) with \(v_1^i,v_1^e\), respectively in the Eq. (2.9) we have
Thus, on using the conditions (1.4)–(1.5) we conclude that \(v_1=0\) a.e. in \(\mathbb {R}^N\). Step 2. \(S_{11}\) is bounded below.
Suppose there exists a sequence \((g_2^n)\in \widetilde{H}^{-\frac{1}{2}}(\Gamma _1)\) such that \(S_{11}g_2^n\rightarrow f\), for some \(f\in {H}^{\frac{1}{2}}(\Gamma _1)\).
Case 1. Assume that \((g_2^n)\) is a bounded sequence in \(\widetilde{H}^{-\frac{1}{2}}(\Gamma _1)\). Therefore, there exists a subsequence \((g_2^n)\) and \(g_2\in \widetilde{H}^{-\frac{1}{2}}(\Gamma _1)\) such that \((g_2^n)\) converges weakly to \(g_2\), i.e. \(g_2^n\overset{w}{\rightharpoonup }g_2\) in \(\widetilde{H}^{-\frac{1}{2}}(\Gamma _1)\). Let \(l\in \widetilde{H}^{-\frac{1}{2}}(\Gamma _1)\). Then we have
Since every reflexive space has a unique predual, hence \(S_{11}g_2=f\). Therefore, \(S_{11}\) has a closed range.
Case 2. Assume that \((g_2^n)\) is an unbounded sequence in \(\widetilde{H}^{-\frac{1}{2}}(\Gamma _1)\). Let us denote
Hence, \(\left||G^n\right||_{\widetilde{H}^{-\frac{1}{2}}(\Gamma _1)}=1.\) Therefore, there exists a subsequence \((G^n)\) and \(G\in \widetilde{H}^{-\frac{1}{2}}(\Gamma _1)\) such that \(G^n\overset{w}{\rightharpoonup }G\) in \(\widetilde{H}^{-\frac{1}{2}}(\Gamma _1)\). Since \(S_{11}g_2^n\rightarrow f\) and \(\left||g_2^n\right||_{\widetilde{H}^{-\frac{1}{2}}(\Gamma _1)}\rightarrow \infty \), we have \(S_{11}G^n\rightarrow 0\) in \(H^{\frac{1}{2}}(\Gamma _1)\). From Case 1 it easily follows that \(S_{11}G=0\), which further implies \(G=0\) by the injectivity of \(S_{11}\). Using the invertibility of \(S_\lambda \) (refer Remark 2.14) we obtain
We know that \(S_{11}G^n=S_\lambda (\widetilde{G}^n)|_{\Gamma _1}\) and \(S_{12}G^n=S_\lambda (\widetilde{G}^n)|_{\Gamma _2}\). For \(x\ne y\), \(\Phi (x-y)\) is a \(C^\infty \) function. This implies \(S_{12}G^n\rightarrow 0\) in \(H^{\frac{1}{2}}(\Gamma _2)\), since \(G^n\overset{w}{\rightharpoonup }0\) in \(\widetilde{H}^{-\frac{1}{2}}(\Gamma _1)\). Hence, \(S_\lambda (\widetilde{G^n})\rightarrow 0\) in \(H^{\frac{1}{2}}(\Gamma )\), which is a contradiction to (3.2). Therefore, we conclude that \(S_{11}\) has closed range. Thus, \(S_{11}\) is bounded below since \(S_{11}\) is injective and its range is closed.
Step 3.\(S_{11}\)has dense range.
Assume that \(S_{11}^*g_2=0\) for some \(g_2\in \widetilde{H}^{-\frac{1}{2}}(\Gamma _1)\). Hence, for any \(l\in \widetilde{H}^{-\frac{1}{2}}(\Gamma _1)\),
Choose \(l=g_2\). Then by proceeding on similar lines as in step 1 we get \(g_2=0\). Since \(\text {Kernel}(S_{11}^*)= {\text {Range}(S_{11})^\perp }=\overline{\text {Range}(S_{11})}^\perp \), the injectivity of \(S_{11}^*\) implies \(S_{11}\) has dense range.
Combining the results from the above three steps we conclude that the operator \(S_{11}:\widetilde{H}^{-\frac{1}{2}}(\Gamma _1)\rightarrow {H}^{\frac{1}{2}}(\Gamma _1)\) is bijective. \(\square \)
Theorem 3.2
Let \(\Gamma _2\subset \Gamma \), then the operator \(D_{22}:\widetilde{H}^{\frac{1}{2}}(\Gamma _2)\rightarrow {H}^{-\frac{1}{2}}(\Gamma _2)\) is invertible.
Proof
Similar to the steps in Theorem 3.1, we will show that \(D_{22}\) is injective and bounded below with a dense range. Assume that there exists \(g_1\in \widetilde{H}^{\frac{1}{2}}(\Gamma _2)\) such that \(D_{22}g_1=0\) on \(\Gamma _2\). We now express \(v_2(x)=\mathbb {K}_\lambda \widetilde{g}_1(x)\), for all \(x\in \mathbb {R}^N{\setminus }\Gamma \). From the Eqs. (2.6) and (2.7) we get

As the operators \(D_\lambda \) and \(S_\lambda \) are also continuous by Costabel and Stephan (1985), the inverse of \(A_2, \text {i.e.}~A_2^{-1}\) is also bounded. We know the operators \(K_{21}~\text {and}~K_{12}^*\) are compact operators and hence \(A_1\) is also a compact operator.
Thus, we can write \(A_2^{-1}A=A_2^{-1}A_1+I=C_1+I\) and \(AA_2^{-1}=A_1A_2^{-1}+I=C_2+I\) where \(C_1,C_2\) are compact operators. Using Theorem 2.5, it is equivalent to say that A is a Fredholm operator. This implies ind\((A)=0\) (by Theorem 2.6). Now to show A is bijective it is sufficient to show A is injective, i.e. dim ker\((A)=0\).

4 Existence Results of (P2)
Problem (P2) is a mixed boundary value problem of Poisson equation where \(\mu \in \mathcal {M}({{\bar{\Omega }}})\) is a bounded Radon measure supported on \(\Omega \) and the boundary data are \(f_1\in H^{\frac{1}{2}}(\Gamma _1)\) and \(f_2\in H^{-\frac{1}{2}}(\Gamma _2)\).

Proof
The invertibility of the operators \(S_{11}\) and \(D_{22}\) follows from Theorem 3.1 and Theorem 3.2 of Chang and Choe (2008), respectively. Further, following the proof of Theorem 3.3, Theorem 3.4 one can see that the matrix operator A is invertible and the problems (4.2)–(4.3) have a unique solution denoted as \(u_n\). So \((\nabla u_n)\) is bounded in \({M}^{\frac{N}{N-1}}(\Omega )\). Hence, we conclude that \((u_n)\) is bounded in \(W^{1,q}(\Omega )\) for every \(q<\frac{N}{N-1}\). \(\square \)
Theorem 4.4
There exists a weak solution u of (1.6) in \(W^{1,q}(\Omega )\), for all \(q<\frac{N}{N-1}\).
Proof
According to Lemma 4.3, \((u_n)\) is bounded in \(W^{1,q}(\Omega )\) which is a reflexive space. This implies that there exists a function \(u\in W^{1,q}(\Omega )\) such that \(u_n\) converges weakly to u, i.e. \(u_n\overset{w}{\rightharpoonup } u\) in \(W^{1,q}(\Omega )\), for all \(q<\frac{N}{N-1}\).
Thus for \(\varphi \in X\),
The sequence \((\mu _n)\) converges to \(\mu \) in the weak* topology in the sense given in (4.1). On passing the limit \(n\rightarrow \infty \) in the weak formulation (4.4) involving \(\mu _n\) we obtain
Hence, a weak solution of (1.6) in \(W^{1,q}(\Omega )\) for every \(q<\frac{N}{N-1}\) is guaranteed. \(\square \)
Now with the consideration of Theorems 4.2 and 4.4 we state our main result which is as follows.
Theorem 4.5
There exists a weak solution u of (P2) with \(\mu \in \mathcal {M}({\bar{\Omega }})\), with support is in \(\Omega \), as a nonhomogeneous term, \(f_1\in H^{\frac{1}{2}}(\Gamma _1)\) and \(f_2\in H^{-\frac{1}{2}}(\Gamma _2)\). The solution u belongs to \(W^{1,q}(\Omega )\), for every \(q<\frac{N}{N-1}\), for (IP2) and belongs to \(H^1_{loc}(\mathbb {R}^N{\setminus }\bar{\Omega })\) for (EP2) satisfying Eq. (1.8) at infinity.
