Abstract

This paper establishes a safety index system and the grading criterion for the safety assessment of freeway tunnel operation. The IAHP (improved analytic hierarchy process) is used to ascertain the weight sequence of freeway tunnel operation's safety indexes. The grey correlation method is used to calculate the correlation degree between the given sequence and the standard sequence. The vector quantity corresponding to the maximum correlation degree is the safety degree of the freeway tunnel operation. IAHP uses “three scales” method to form the judging matrix. Compared with the “nine scales” method of AHP, IAHP is easier to make the matrix consistent. Based on the theories and methods mentioned in the paper, a freeway tunnel in China’s Hebei province is given as a calculation example to validate the methods’ effectiveness.

This study proves that the method based on grey correlation analysis and IAHP is suitable for the safety evaluation of tunnel operation. At the same time, this method can provide a reference for other types of tunnel safety evaluation. According to the analysis results, it can be seen that tunnel structure and facilities have the greatest impact on tunnel operation safety. The total weight of the anti-skid property of tunnel pavement, tunnel safety facilities, tunnel lighting, the average daily traffic volume of a single tunnel, tunnel speed limit and the compliance of hazardous chemical vehicle management standards is more than 85%, which is the focus of tunnel operation safety management.
