Abstract
Alveolar bone grafting (ABG) is used to obliterate the alveolar gap in the maxillary bone in cleft lip and palate patients. This procedure is performed in mixed dentition stage, usually at 8–9 years of age. Majority of the surgeons use autogenous bone from iliac crest, calvarium, mandibular symphysis, and tibia. Iliac crest is still the most commonly used donor site. Some centers have used artificial bone to fill the alveolar cleft.
Role of orthodontist is very much important in this procedure. Basic concept is to move the teeth into the new bone (formed) in the alveolar cleft, by orthodontist. Management of pain is an essential element in postoperative protocol.
