Abstract
Leopold Kronecker nait en 1823 à Liegnitz (Prusse) dans une famille aisée. Après des études secondaires dans sa ville natale, il étudie à partir de 1841 les mathématiques à l’Université de Berlin où il a entre autres comme professeur Dirichlet et Steiner. En 1845, il soutient une thèse intitulée De unitatibus complexis. Pendant une dizaine d’année, il travaille dans l’entreprise familiale tout en continuant à effectuer des recherches. En 1855, il revient à Berlin pour s’investir dans la recherche mathématique mais sans chercher une position universitaire. En 1860, il est élu membre de l’Académie des sciences de Berlin et succède en 1883 à Kummer à l’Université de Berlin quand ce dernier prend sa retraite. Il occupe cette position jusqu’à son décès en 1891.
