Zusammenfassung
Cicely Saunders, die Gründerin von St. Christopher’s Hospice, formulierte den Begriff „totaler Schmerz“ und meinte damit die physische, emotionale, soziale und spirituelle Dimension des Schmerzes. Aus der Hospizbewegung entwickelte sich die Palliativversorgung mit dem Ziel der Verbesserung der Lebensqualität bei Patienten mit fortgeschrittenen Erkrankungen. Durch Kontrolle von belastenden körperlichen Symptomen, psychosoziale Begleitung und Unterstützung bei spirituellen Fragen soll den Patienten durch ein multiprofessionelles Teams geholfen werden, mit der fortschreitenden Erkrankung und dem nahen Lebensende umzugehen. In Deutschland wird zwischen allgemeiner und spezialisierter Palliativversorgung unterschieden. Spezialisierte Einrichtungen sind Palliativstationen, Palliativdienste im Krankenhaus und die spezialisierte ambulante Palliativversorgung. In stationären Hospizen können Patienten auch über einen längeren Zeitraum betreut werden und sterben dort in der Regel.
