Zusammenfassung
Harry Triandis war ein bedeutender Interkulturalist und Mitbegründer der kulturvergleichenden Psychologie. Seine Forschung, die Kultur als kollektives Bedeutungs- und Sinnsystem versteht, beschäftigt sich mit kognitiven Aspekten sozialer Wahrnehmung, Einstellungen, Normen, Rollen und Werten in unterschiedlichen Kulturen. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Beziehung zwischen Kultur und psychologischen Prozessen und deren Einfluss auf Verhalten. Triandis faszinierte das Spannungsfeld zwischen universellen psychologischen Konstrukten (etic) und Kulturspezifika (emic). Die vorherrschende nordamerikanische Dominanz der Interkulturalitätsforschung bezeichnete er als einen Intellectual Colonialism. Triandis wurde bekannt für seine umfangreichen Arbeiten zu den Kulturdimensionen Individualismus und Kollektivismus, und dem einhergehenden Konzept der In-Group und Out-Group. Er trug sowohl zu konzeptionellen Entwicklungen, empirischen Untersuchungen, Methodeninnovationen als auch zum Transfer von der Theorie in die Praxis interkulturellen Lernens bei, insbesondere mit dem Trainingskonzept Culture Assimilator.
