Zusammenfassung
Auch wenn heute Einigkeit herrscht, dass Terrorismus eine der größten Bedrohungen des 21. Jahrhunderts ist, so wenig einig sind sich WissenschaftlerInnen, ExpertInnen und PolitikerInnen darüber, wie Terrorismus zu definieren, zu verstehen und zu erklären ist. Der Beitrag stellt die seit Jahrzehnten andauernden Versuche, den Terrorismus zu definieren vor und erläutert die Hintergründe zu diesem Kampf um Deutungshoheit. Eng mit der Definition verknüpft, so zeigt der Beitrag auf, ist allerdings die Frage nach den Ursachen und den theoretischen Perspektiven zum Verständnis und zur Erklärung des Terrorismus. Insbesondere die Frage nach der Rolle von Religion wird in der Forschung stark thematisiert und der Beitrag adressiert diese Diskussion mit Blick auf den islamistischen Terrorismus. Der Beitrag zeigt, dass es heute eine Vielfalt an Definitionen und theoretischen Perspektiven gibt und sich Terrorismus- und Radikalisierungsforschung angenähert haben, diese Beziehung aber gerade mit Blick auf Ursachen des Terrorismus noch vertieft werden sollte.
