Zusammenfassung
In diesem Kapitel stellen wir drei Thesen vor, die mithilfe der Theorie sozialer Systeme bearbeitet werden und die als Horizonte für empirische Forschung und Theoriebildung in der Umweltsoziologie herhalten können. Erstens, mit den theoretischen Begriffen der Systemtheorie lassen sich Analysen anleiten, die auf die Korrelation zwischen sozialem Strukturaufbau und entropischer Degradation fokussieren. Soziale Mechanismen sowie operative Prinzipien verweisen auf Ermöglichung und Beschleunigung von Kommunikation. Zweitens produziert die Gesellschaft Selbstbeschreibungen darüber, wie sie sich selbst und ihre Beziehung zur Natur versteht. Die Theorie sozialer Systeme zeigt die Kontingenz dieser Selbstbeschreibungen auf und verweist auf Möglichkeiten der strukturellen Transformationen. Drittens liefert die Theorie sozialer Systeme durch ihre Evolutionstheorie eine Botschaft der Vorsicht, die Beziehung zwischen Natur und Gesellschaft zu kontrollieren oder zu steuern. Planungs- und Umwelt-Governance-Strategien sind nur begrenzt in der Lage, soziale und natürliche Komplexität zu bewältigen.
