Zusammenfassung

Das Thema Migration hat in den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten in Deutschland, in Europa und in der Welt sowohl in der Wissenschaft als auch in der Gesellschaft erheblich an Bedeutung gewonnen. Das Volumen grenzüberschreitender Wanderungen ist sogar noch schneller gewachsen als die Weltbevölkerung, und unterschiedliche Formen internationaler Migration betreffen heute fast alle Teile der Welt unmittelbar. Wesentliche Erklärungsfaktoren dieser Entwicklungen sind ungleiche demographische Entwicklungen, unterschiedliche Lebenslagen und -chancen, allgemeine Globalisierungstendenzen sowie andauernde gewaltsame Konflikte. Die Migrations- und Integrationsforschung hat in Deutschland an Umfang, Qualität und Differenzierung erheblich zugenommen. Dies gilt sowohl für den Bereich der Arbeits- als auch der Flüchtlingsmigration. Es entwickelten sich gesellschaftliche Debatten um nachhaltige Formen der Gestaltung von Ankommen, der Integration und des Umgangs mit Vielfalt. Ebenso werden die Selbstwahrnehmung von eingewanderten Gruppen und angemessene Bezeichnungspolitiken für die zweite und dritte Folgegeneration Eingewanderter zunehmend thematisiert. Die sozialwissenschaftliche Forschung zu Migration und Integration in Deutschland verbindet sich zunehmend mit der entsprechenden internationalen Diskussion.

Der Begriff transnationale Migration wird im Englischen oft gleichbedeutend zu internationaler oder zu cross-border migration benutzt. Eine solche Verwendung erscheint für diesen Zusammenhang zu breit. Transnationale Migration soll hier einen spezifischen Idealtypus der internationalen Migration bezeichnen.

    Für die USA: „First, processes of migration are developmental and longitudinal, and surveys taken at a single point in time cannot capture this inherent dynamism. Second, migration is more than an individual or family decision: it is also a response to larger structural conditions in sending and receiving societies, factors that cannot be studied easily by using surveys of individuals and households. Finally, migrants and their families inevitably make decision within a local setting. National, state, and regional conditions are important, but their effects are mediated through local social and economic institutions that are difficult to study by using survey data alone“ (Durand und Massey 1992, S. 12 f.).
