Zusammenfassung
Cybergnosis und Cybermystik bezeichnen religiöse Deutungen (insbesondere in literarischer und filmischer Form seit den 1990er-Jahren) von digitalen Technologien, in denen imaginiert wird, das Internet und seine vorgestellte Zukunft (der „Cyberspace“) würden das gnostische Potenzial haben, den Menschen aus dem ‚Gefängnis‘ der fleischlichen Welt zu befreien und ihm den Zugang zu einem mystischen, allumfassenden, ewigen Bewusstsein auf Basis einer digitalen Existenz ermöglichen. Der Ort religiös versprochener Erlösung sei eine technisch verfasste, virtuelle Realität. Dieses alles überragende Computersystem und dessen virtuelle Wirklichkeit wenden sich in dystopischen Varianten des Narrativs allerdings auch gegen die Menschheit. Der Artikel geht diesen Phantasmen anhand ihrer Vorgeschichten nach, verweist auf die Entstehung der modernen Gnosis als Reaktion auf technische und wissenschaftliche Innovationen des 19. Jahrhunderts und erörtert die zugrunde liegenden Vorstellungen, wie die einer Universalität von Information oder die einer Eschatologie, die Technologie als Erlöserin versteht und nicht als Agent einer Säkularisierung.
