Per Olov Löwdin invited to the first summer school in 1958 at Vålådalen, a tourist and sports resort in the Swedish mountains, 40 km from the railway on a narrow road. Lecturers included Preuss, Shull, Hall, McWeeny, Jansen, and Matsen. Among the 33 participants were Jim Cooley, Guiseppe Del Re, Bill Kern, Kimio Ohno, Ruben Pauncz, Louis Pierce, and Peter Toennies. The symposium week offered talks by Ken Hedberg, Robert Mulliken, and Linus Pauling.
