Zusammenfassung
Vergessen kann als Element des medizinischen und psychiatrischen Diskurses über Trauer angesehen werden, der eine Loslösung von den Verstorbenen, das Verblassen von Erinnerungen und die Bewältigung des Verlustes impliziert. Erinnern stellt das soziologisch inspirierte Gegenmodell dar, wie es sich beispielsweise im Konzept der „Continuing Bonds“ manifestiert. Das aktive Weiterführen der Beziehung zu den Verstorbenen sowie fortlaufende Kommunikation über die Toten sind Kennzeichen dieser neuen Perspektive auf Trauer. In diesem Zusammenhang werden virtuelle Friedhöfe und Web Memorials als digitale Medien für eine aktive Erinnerungsarbeit betrachtet. Vor dem Hintergrund der interaktionistischen Emotionssoziologie können Erinnern und Vergessen als Gefühlsregeln interpretiert werden. Die normative Bevorzugung des Erinnerns führt jedoch dazu, dass das Recht auf Vergessen von Verstorbenen im aktuellen Diskurs über das Erinnern der Toten ausgeblendet wird.

Die Annahme eines „Verlust des Selbst“ ist in der psychologischen und psychiatrischen Trauerforschung negativ konnotiert. Sie steht in einem direkten Gegensatz zum Ideal des autonomen, unabhängigen Individuums: „(…) the people we love seem to become part of our self, a view that is often held by poets but one that others may find hard to accept – perhaps because it makes us more vulnerable. It is more comfortable to think of the self as a separate, independent, and therefore safe, entity (…)“ (Parkes und Prigerson 2011, S. 111).

Ein Umdenken innerhalb der psychologischen Forschung markiert die Umbenennung der vierten „Traueraufgabe“ nach Worden (2011). Lautete die Traueraufgabe in der ersten Auflage noch „emotionaler Rückzug von der verstorbenen Person“ und rekurriert damit implizit auf das Vergessensmodell, so wird aktuell „eine dauerhafte Verbindung zu der Person inmitten des Aufbruchs in ein neues Leben“ als neue Aufgabe für Hinterbliebene beschrieben (vgl. Worden 2011, S. 56).
