Zusammenfassung
Der bestimmende Eindruck von der arabischen Welt ist seit geraumer Zeit der eines elenden Zustands, der gelegentlich als „arabische Sackgasse“ bezeichnet wird und dem ein intensives, von Intellektuellen oft ausgedrücktes Gefühl des Unwohlseins, der Unzufriedenheit entspricht, das man gern als „arabische Malaise“ bezeichnet (Béji 1991; Nassib 1991). Dieses Gefühl ist umso schmerzlicher, als es mit dem Bewusstsein einstiger Größe kontrastiert.
