Ein Land, das seit 1917 einen wichtigen Literaturpreis im Bereich Biographie/Autobiographie vergibt, schätzt offensichtlich die Darstellung der Person in der Geschichte. Der Markt ist differenziert, die Nachfrage groß. Die traditionelle Wertschätzung des Genres in den USA hat sowohl zu institutionalisierter Biographieforschung geführt als auch – verstärkt seit den 1980er Jahren – zu einer (akademischen) Debatte über Form, Methodik und Theorie der Biographie (s.
