Zusammenfassung
In diesem erfolgreichen Erstlingswerk, einer Prosasammlung aus dem Jahr 1959, sind alle für das spätere Romanschaffen des Autors bestimmenden Kriterien bereits angelegt. Zum einen werden zentrale Themen skizziert, etwa die Situation der gegen Konventionen rebellierenden Jugend in der jüdischen Familie, sexuelle Obsessionen, der Assimilationsdruck bei der beruflichen Selbstverwirklichung sowie die zwischen bloß ethnischer Zugehörigkeit und orthodox-religiösem Glauben schwankende Einstellung zum Judentum. Zum anderen wird die zwischen realistischen und antirealistischen Gestaltungsformen oszillierende Erzählweise, die im konkreten Detail mit oft autobiographischem Bezug universelle Phänomene symbolisiert, in Lang- und Kurzform vorgeführt.
