Zussamenfassung
Wohl keinem anderen Phänomen der Popkultur sind mehr kulturhistorische Superlative zugeschrieben worden als dem Rock ’n’ Roll. Je nach Blickwinkel und Methode gilt er als Wendepunkt oder Neubeginn, als kulturelle Explosion oder musikalische Revolution. Fast alle späteren Stile der Popmusik haben sich – positiv wie die Beat- und Rockmusik der 1960er Jahre oder auch kritisch wie mitunter Hardrock oder Punk – auf ihn bezogen. Faktisch stehen dem zahlreiche Kontinuitäten zwischen der populären Musik der USA vor und nach 1955 gegenüber. Ebenso offensichtlich gehen dem Rock ’n’ Roll weitreichende Veränderungen innerhalb der US-Gesellschaft voraus, die seinen Höhenflug und seine anhaltenden, globalen Nachwirkungen erst möglich gemacht haben. Dennoch waren die Phänomene und Diskurse des Rock ’n’ Roll unbestreitbar ein Motor tiefgreifenden gesellschaftlichen Wandels (vgl. Peterson 1990).
