Von italienischem Boden sind Händler, Forscher und Seefahrer aufgebrochen (Heydenreich 2011); ebenso ist koloniale Gewalt von dort ausgegangen, schon in der Frühen Neuzeit, z. B. bei der Expansion der Seerepubliken, insbesondere Venedigs in die Ägäis oder nach Dalmatien.
