Zusammenfassung
Die Tragödie ist eine anti-triumphalistische Gattung. Sie steht in negativer Beziehung zum splendor der Erscheinung. Zumindest in ihrer neuzeitlichen Form setzt sie sich mit einem Ritual auseinander, das auf die göttliche Erhöhung souveräner Personen angelegt ist. Die Konstruktion der Gattung, wie sie in der Frühen Neuzeit in Frankreich, Italien, Deutschland und England stattfindet, ist zugleich die Dekonstruktion einer antiken Formel, die dem Siegeszug des Triumphators eine spezifische protokollarische Fassung gab. Ihr Angriffspunkt ist ein Zeichenrepertoire, das dem diente, was Stephen Greenblatt »Renaissance self-fashioning« nennt. Ihre Kritik gilt Formen des Selbstentwurfs, die den einzelnen als Unsterblichen und Unbesiegbaren inszenierten.
