Abstract
The article outlines the main provisions of the new project for the construction of the railway line, called “Northern Latitudinal Railway”. It shows the need to increase the capacity of this line in the coming years. The purpose of this study was to determine the capacity potential of the single-track railway lines of the “Northern Latitudinal Railway” and to determine the level after which it may be necessary to modernize the system of interval train control. Existing ways of increasing the capacity of single-track railway lines are described, with the assumption that the most effective way, in the current conditions, will be to modernize the system of interval control of train traffic by using the principle of moving block sections. The theoretical calculation of the capacity of single-track sections after the implementation of the interval train control system with moving block sections, and the lower and upper limit of the capacity was determined. The calculations used the mathematical apparatus of the theoretical foundations of railroad operation, mainly mathematical methods of determining the carrying capacity of railway lines.
