Abstract

Francis Hutcheson was part of a group of philosophers called Scottish sentimentalists , known for defending the existence of a special faculty, the moral sense or moral feeling, which is the origin of morality. Hutcheson’s philosophy closely follows the theses of the Earl of Shaftesbury (1659–1729), who is considered the initiator of the school.
