Abstract

The banking system of Russia has been functioning in a challenging environment in recent years. Changes to international market conditions and the macroeconomic situation, approaches to banking regulations and the rehabilitation policy have been affecting proficiency, with which banks have been discharging their functions in the Russian economy.

Importance of the banking system for social and economic development of the Russian Federation shall be currently increasing in the setting of damped growth of the world economy, contraction of external demand, persisting sanctions, consequences of containment measures.

This thesis consists of five chapters. The second chapter addresses essence, structure and main functions of the banking sector. The third chapter provides analysis of the current condition and peculiarities of development of the banking sector of the Russian economy. The fourth one addresses current issues and development potential of the Russian banking sector.
