Obesity, Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery

Abstract

Bariatric surgery was initially developed as a tool for weight reduction only, but it is gaining increasing popularity because of its remarkable effect on glucose metabolism in persons with obesity. Recent publications showed the superiority of metabolic surgery over medical treatment for type 2 diabetes, creating a new field of clinical research that is currently overflowing with outstanding high-quality data in the medical community. Metabolic surgery is effective in treating diabetes in people with obesity. In this chapter, we presented a review of the relative benefits and results associated with metabolic surgery for treating type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in patients with a body mass index (BMI) below 35 kg/m2.
