Abstract

Hyponatremia is the most common electrolyte disorder among hospitalized patients. There are many etiologies behind hyponatremia, which is in any case the consequence of a relative excess of water compared to total body sodium, which can be reduced, normal or even increased. Because of its frequency and different causes, hyponatremia can be observed in virtually all possible clinical scenarios, encompassing medical as well as surgery specialties. Acute, severe hyponatremia may represent a life-threatening condition; however, it is now well known that also mild, chronic hyponatremia mat affect the health status. Indeed, this situation has been associated with falls, gait instability, bone fractures, bone loss and attention deficits. In fact, it has been shown that hyponatremia is an independent risk of death in a number of pathologies, including cancer. A thorough diagnostic work-up is essential to define the etiology of hyponatremia in different clinical settings and to start the most appropriate treatment.
