Abstract
Much has been written on the motives that lead authors to translate their work, but not enough attention has been paid to the question of why multilingual authors reject the option of self-translation or do not repeat the experience once they have tried it. This chapter focuses on the choice to not self-translate, a decision which is consciously made in a context that promotes the active participation of authors in the creation of the target text and in a literary system that is structured by the asymmetric relations between the Basque and Spanish languages. The analysis covers the literary trajectory of several contemporary Basque authors, with the aim of observing moments in their career when they had the chance to self-translate their work into Spanish, and of investigating how and why they rejected this opportunity, as well as what implications this choice may have had in their work.

- 9.
- 10.
Self-translations of Basque works can have Spanish as their target language in the case of Basque-Spanish authors and French, when they are Basque-French. In line with the general theme of this volume, this contribution will focus exclusively on the first group.
- 11.
All quotations in other languages have been translated into English [Translator’s note].
- 12.
The remaining 12.24% corresponds to works that have not been classified, either for lack of information or because there is contradictory data.
- 13.
We speak of “temporary” rigidity, because his position responds to the current status of Basque language and culture; perhaps it should be considered “supposedly temporary,” since it is unlikely that Basque will reach a symmetric status in relation to Spanish or French, at least in the next decades.
- 14.
Sarrionandia has had six books translated into Catalan, three into Italian, two into German, a poetic anthology into Galician, and a children book into English.
- 15.
Uribe assigns the status of Vulgate to the version that (like the Latin version of the Bible attributed to Jerome) becomes the one from which translations into other languages are made. Here, he is referring to the unpublished modified version in Basque that became the source for the English translation of his first novel (Bilbao-New York-Bilbao).
- 16.
Manterola classifies as “semi-self-translations” the collaborative translations of Giménez Bech and Lertxundi, which are normally presented as allograph (2017a).
- 17.
In Urretabizkaia’s words, at that time, “the literary production in Basque was not frequently translated” (2011), which makes the interest in her work quite remarkable.
