Abstract
The problem of synthesizing decentralized control and synchronous communication policies has been examined from a variety of perspectives, including both top-down and bottom-up approaches. We examine various aspects of the problem by addressing some basic questions such as “why communicate?”, “who communicates?”, “what should be communicated?”, and “when/where should communication occur?”. A brief survey of the literature is presented followed by an in-depth example of three bottom-up techniques for designing communication protocols that, when applied to the system, ensure that the decentralized control objective is met.
