Market Demand for Underground Gas Storage in China

Abstract

As a representative of emerging economies, China is in urgent pursuit of clean energy such as natural gas. In this context, this chapter comprehensively analyzes China’s natural gas consumption market and consumption structure and proposes a sales method for the China National Petroleum company, as the main natural gas resource supplier, based on the current situation of the long-distance natural gas transmission and distribution network. In order to ensure the stable and safe operation of the natural gas transmission and distribution scheme, the gas consumption structure and nonuniformity of eight typical regions in China are analyzed. Finally, the matching capacity and scale of the gas storage facilities are calculated. Compared with the current situation and expansion plans of the existing gas storage facilities, suggestions are proposed for the construction of a large number of gas storage facilities in the future. In the face of such a huge pressure for new gas storage facilities, this chapter reviews the technological progress of China’s gas storage facilities over the past 20 years in order to make technical preparations for the subsequent large-scale construction of gas storage facilities.
