Abstract
Ultrasonography is a well-established, non-invasive imaging modality and belongs to the diagnostic standard procedures in various fields of clinical medicine. In dermatology, medium-frequency sonography (7.5–18 MHz) and high-frequency sonography (20–50 MHz) are used for different purposes and have to be distinguished. Medium-frequency B-mode sonography is common in dermatological oncology and may be assisted by color-coded duplex sonography, sono-elastography, and sonographically oriented fine needle aspiration cytology for assessment of peripheral lymph nodes in the context of all potentially metastasizing skin tumors. High-frequency sonography can be employed for preoperative assessment and follow-up of skin tumors, as well as for monitoring the dynamics of chronic and inflammatory skin diseases focusing on measurement of skin thickness and skin density.
