Zusammenfassung
In der Öffentlichkeit wie in der Wissenschaft ist umstritten, wie man Professionen bestimmen kann. Ob sich Professionen durch ihre Tätigkeiten, durch eine höhere Autonomie, durch eine normative Orientierung, durch spezifische Aufgaben oder Funktionen von anderen Tätigkeitsformen und Berufen abheben, wird unterschiedlich beurteilt. Ein Punkt aber dürfte unumstritten sein: Professionen zeichnen sich durch Wissen aus, vielleicht sogar durch ein besonderes Wissen. Auch innerhalb der Professionssoziologie selbst dürfte es wohl keine Position geben, die diese epistemische Dimension nicht als ein notwendiges, wenn auch sicherlich nicht als ein hinreichendes Merkmal von Professionen herausstellt. Professionen verfügen nicht nur über eine akademische Wissensbasis, über ein „Sonderwissen“ (Schütz 1972), sondern sie sind auch für die Verwaltung, Aneignung und Weiterentwicklung dieses Wissenskorpus verantwortlich. Und es lässt sich, darüber hinaus, mit Abbott (1988, S. 323) in einer lapidaren Weise formulieren, dass Professionen solche Gruppen sind, „[which, V.] institutionalizes expertise in people“. Die professionale Arbeitsbeziehung zwischen einem Professionsvertreter und seinem Klienten, Mandanten oder Patienten ist in Bezug auf das zu bearbeitende Problem eine epistemisch asymmetrische Beziehung, in welcher es darum geht, Probleme von Personen oder Gruppen auf der Basis von und mit Hilfe von Wissen und Können zu lösen. Professionen stehen deshalb „zwischen“ Wissenschaft und Lebenswelt, zwischen Theorie und Praxis, zwischen legitimiertem, ausgezeichnetem Wissen und Alltagswissen, zwischen Werten und Problemen.
