Zusammenfassung
Der 1936 erschienene Roman entstand in den Jahren der ‚Großen Depression‘ und nutzt für sein Handlungsgerüst die schriftlichen und mündlichen Quellen zu ‚Gabriel's Rebellion‘ – einem Sklavenaufstand des Jahres 1800. Wie in den ‚slave narratives‘ des 19. Jh.s fungiert das Streben nach Freiheit als zentrales Motiv.
