Handbook of Energy Governance in Europe

Abstract

The final chapter draws on the findings from this handbook, particularly the country studies. We present energy policy in Europe by examining statistical data on the development of the European energy system and examples from individual countries. We first assess the long-term development of Europe’s energy mix and then continue with a closer look at the developments of the main energy sources, governance structures, and policy instruments. To assess the overall results of the energy transition in Europe, we introduce a scoring system that takes into account both transition successes and greenhouse gas emission reductions. This scoring system is then applied to the EU-27 and the UK to compare the results of the different countries and to take stock of the development over the last 20 years. Finally, we give an outlook on the European challenges and perspectives on the way to climate neutrality by 2050.
