Abstract

As leaders in research and innovation, universities increasingly have a responsibility to recognize their environmental impacts and to advance sustainable campuses in order to embody environmental stewardship and serve as examples of how to integrate sustainable practices into our infrastructure and daily lives. The move toward creating green campuses has grown within the last 15 years and universities are developing new environmental offices and crafting their own sustainability plans. Our research has gathered information from universities in the United States that have demonstrated sustainability efforts and have incorporated an environmental focus into their academic programs, engagement practices, operations, and leadership. This information includes office structures, academic programs and research, student and faculty engagement, community outreach, and innovative programming. Using case studies, this chapter highlights some best practices across US universities and points to some trends in sustainability campus organization and leadership.
