Abstract

Hematopoietic stem cells are the best-studied stem cells within human physiology. Transplantation physicians use the complex biology behind these multipotent stem cells to facilitate autologous and allogeneic bone marrow transplantation. In order to understand the clinical factors significant to each of these processes, and how they differ based on the goal of the transplant, it is first necessary to learn about the biological framework by which hematopoietic stem cells produce blood cells, including the hierarchy of hematopoiesis, critical factors, and forces within the hematopoietic niches, and how aging impacts these important stem cells. It is also helpful to understand how the application of technology can improve the depth to which this complex stem and progenitor cell network is understood. This chapter will address these questions.
