Abstract

Allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation utilizes the potential of an alloreactive graft-versus-tumor effect for the treatment of hematologic malignancies and other malignant and nonmalignant diseases. Since the first allogeneic transplants more than five decades ago, significant advances have occurred in transplantation technology, donor availability, and supportive care that have made transplantation safer and increasingly available to patients, and survival after transplantation continues to improve. This chapter will review the clinical rationale for using allogeneic transplantation and provide an overview of its indications, process, and complications. In addition, the chapter will review concepts and outcomes of matched related donor transplantation.
