Abstract
Digital innovations are expected to fundamentally change the way how products are designed and produced. With that, a change of the whole working environment for organizations as well as employees is expected. This change may yield to positive effects for employees’ health such as a reduction of physically demanding work, but it may also yield to an increase of psychosocial stressors. This chapter focuses on the possible influence of digitization in the industry sector on different aspects of work. Work- and health-related correlates of digitization will be considered on three different levels of analysis. On the macro-level implications and consequences of digitization for the labor market will be discussed. On the meso-level implications for organizations in the industrial sector will be outlined, and on the micro-level implications for individuals will be described. These implications on the micro-level focus on the three main themes (1) on-screen control activities, (2) human-robot interaction, and (3) monitoring of work performance and their relation to health.
