Background
Children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) including autism, Asperger’s syndrome, and pervasive developmental disorder, not otherwise specified, have similar medical problems as children without disabilities. These children can have colds or ear infections as well as other typical illnesses of childhood and adolescence. Little research has addressed the medical problems of adults with autism. The primary care provider should monitor the health of individuals with ASD in the “medical home.” The medical home describes a source of primary care that is accessible, continuous, culturally sensitive, and providing coordinated care. A recent report indicated that children with autism spectrum disorders were less likely than children with other special needs to receive their care in a medical home (Brachlow et al. 2007).
