Chemistry

Halogen elements include fluorine (F), chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br), iodine (I) and astatine (At). Astatine is rare in nature, while the other halogens are associated with common mineral groups and ocean water. Halogens characteristically possess an S2 P5 electron outer shell configuration, one electron short of the inert gas configuration. Although they may form diatomic gas molecules, halogens generally occur as monovalent ions or in single ionic or covalent bonded molecules. Each halogen forms an acid with hydrogen and salts with metals. Table E26 summarizes the chemical characteristics of the primary members of the halogen group.
