Abstract

Antioxidants are molecules that prevent the oxidation process, even at low concentrations, and protect the organism from harmful consequences. Natural antioxidants and their role in human health and nutrition have sparked a lot of curiosity. The majority of the plants have been studied for their antioxidant properties. But the antioxidant potential of Oldenlandia dineshii Sojan & V. Suresh of Rubiaceae has not been studied yet. So the present study focused on the antioxidant potential of endemic plant Oldenlandia dineshii Sojan & V. Suresh, which has a very narrow distribution in the hillocks of Palakkad District, Kerala.

The plants were collected from Nemmara, (10°35′26.6352″N; 76°34′54.6024″E) Palakkad district of Kerala, India, and antioxidant analysis was performed using a methanol extract of the complete plant. The FRAP assay measures total antioxidant power; hence, it was chosen to analyze the plant’s antioxidant capacity.

The inhibition percentage of plant extract increased with an increase in concentration. The inhibition percentage of plant extracts at 5 μg/mL and 20 μg/mL was determined to be 5.48 and 46.89, respectively. The IC50 value of standard positive reference ascorbic acid was 15.85 μg/mL, and that of plant extract was 20.30 μg/mL.

The lower IC50 value corresponds to a higher antioxidant activity of the plant extract. In short, we can conclude that O. dineshii is a promising antioxidant plant having better essential oil profiles, which can be used in the development of potential drugs for human and animal use against various diseases, concerned with oxidation of free radicals and needs more insight into the mechanism of its action.
