Abstract
In this chapter we explore the application of surgical robotics to Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS). Since the first neurosurgical procedure using robotic assistance was performed, a growing number of neurosurgical indications have emerged and different robotic systems have been developed. In the field of intracranial electrode implantation for deep brain stimulation the ability to first pre-plan trajectories using intuitive planning software, examining and correcting that plan prior to surgery and then executing that plan by maintaining precise targeting and fixed tooling positions during surgery makes robotic techniques an obvious fit for DBS. We look at the advances in neurosurgical robots over the last two decades and describe in detail our experience using the NeuroMate robotic system to implant DBS electrodes.
